MONTREAL – Structural work has begun on the Pie-IX rail bridge rehabilitation project. The project is scheduled for December 2025.

According to Cision report, the project will “ensure the long-term viability of the rail link, improve supply chain fluidity, increase rail capacity and optimize the flow of goods on the Port’s rail network.” The Pie-IX railway bridge spans Pie-IX Blvd north of Port Road and will act as “key infrastructure” in Port of Montreal’s network

Currently, the structure has three rail tracks and requires major work on the foundations and decks. The project’s budget is $42.41 million and will work to restore the infrastructure and add an additional fourth track measuring at 200 meters long. Also, crews will build three rail storage tracks for the Lantic sugar refinery. The report says the three storage lanes will allow Lantic to increase sugar-car storage capacity and increase production to meet demand. Earlier this year, the Government of Canada announced $16.75 million will go to the MPA for the project as part of the National Trade Corridors Fund.

President and CEO of the Montreal Port Authority Julie Gascon said, “We are proud to invest in our infrastructure and make a vital commitment to strengthen our supply chain and ensure the sustainability of our facilities. . . These investments will not only improve fluidity and service in our logistics network, but also support businesses and the logistics ecosystem to benefit all citizens in Quebec and the rest of Canada.”

Up until November 2024, the Montreal Port Authority will work on the bridge’s structure. Crews will build retaining walls, reinforce abutments, install anchors, and install caisson piles. Then, crews will install new rail tracks on the Lantic site. With a scheduled completion date in 2025, the commissioning of the new railway bridge is scheduled to take place in the fall.
