BOSTON – The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority gave an update on its work along the Green Line Extension (GLX).

On December 7thRT&S wrote the MBTA had reportedly completed track work on its Green Line and removed speed restrictions. Now,  the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority gave an update on its work along the Green Line Extension (GLX). The GLX, according to the agency, extends the “northern end of the Green Line from Lechmere to Union Square in Somerville and College Avenue in Medford” and was completed last year.

While the work on the GLX was anticipated to be completed by Monday, December 11th, the contractor, GLX Constructors, has requested additional time. In response, the MBTA granted an additional seven nights for the work to be completed, lasting until Sunday, December 17th. Since November 27th, the evening Green Line trains on both Union Square and Medford/Tufts branches have been replaced with shuttle busses.

Phillip Eng, MBTA General Manager and CEO said in a statement: “The MBTA is committed to ensuring that GLXC completes this work safely, thoroughly, and expeditiously. We are disappointed that they could not complete their work on the Green Line Extension on the timeline that they previously projected and, at our direction, they will be bringing in more resources, including more crews. . . We apologize to riders for this inconvenience, and we will continue to do everything in our power to deliver the longer-term, safe, and reliable service that they expect and deserve.”

In addition to granting GLXC’s request for an extension, the MBTA has also directed GLXC to “submit the complete list of their staff, staff experience level of the on-site workforce who will be committed and held accountable for completing the work, and a production schedule that includes GLXC’s full list of resources dedicated to this effort.” Along with GLXC, the MBTA is working to make repairs to the GLX narrow gauge and is “committed to reporting on this progress and will share more with the public.”
