BERLIN, Vt. – Amtrak will upgrade the train platform at Montpelier Junction in Berlin to make the station ADA-compliant.

The $3 million upgrade will allow crews to raise the platform to eight inches above the top of the rails. The platform measures at 300 feet by 13 feet and will be supported by 100 35-feet long helical piers. In addition, crews will install an electric snowmelt system that will turn on when the temperature and humidity reach a certain level. Other upgrades for the station include installing new signage and LED lighting as well as repaving the parking lot to bring it up to ADA-compliance.

According to The Montpelier Bridge, the project started last summer before it was suspended for the winter. Now, the project is expected to be completed by October or November. Banton Construction’s Randy Wood said, “most of the work is being conducted by local companies, including S.D. Ireland Concrete.” Senior Public Relations Manager for Amtrak, Jason Abrams, stated the new parking areas and pathways to the station will be leveled to slopes less than 2%.
