INDIANAPOLIS - Railway Innovation Solutions, LLC has introduced Tietan, an advanced asphalt coating to help increase wood tie longevity.

According to the release, water and sunlight cause degradation to ties over time, but the “polymer-modified asphalt protects against UV rays and water damage, extending the life of crossties and bridge ties.”

The asphalt is applied hot to the top of the tie, where the Tietan goes into the cracks and grooves of said tie. The membrane flexes with the expansion and contraction of the wood tie. Once cooled, it forms a “flexible membrane that bonds with solvent-based treatments like Creosote, Cu-Nap and DCOI.” The end result is a barrier against water and UV rays that is reminiscent of asphalt shingles on the roof of a house. Tietan is designed to bond to chemically-treated wood to prevent the ties from being worn down over time.

“Our customers in the rail industry have embraced Tietan, recognizing its potential to address tie failure issues. We are thrilled with the enthusiastic reception and expanding implementation”, says Buddy Clark, VP of Railway Innovative Solution, LLC.
