FARGO, N.D. - On November 12, BNSF's second of three bridges opened over a stormwater diversion channel in Fargo, North Dakota.

BNSF states one of its grain trains was the first to cross its new 404-foot rail bridge in October. Working with the Red River Valley Alliance (RRVA), the bridge was built over a 30-mile stormwater diversion channel as a way to reduce flooding. There had been “catastrophic flooding” in the area around Fargo and Moorhead, Minnesota, the Class I says. The second bridge opened on November 12.

During construction, BNSF used a shoofly, or temporary track, to reroute trains around the construction site. Now that the first bridge has been opened, BNSF says the shoofly is no longer necessary.

“We appreciate working with RRVA and their efforts to ensure we continue serving our North Dakota customers while also partnering long-term to aid in flood protection for the community,” said BNSF Twin Cities Division Engineer Steve Lyne.
