PEORIA, Ill. – The Illinois Commerce Commission, or ICC, approved projects for ten railroad crossings in the Peoria metro area.

The Illinois Commerce Commission, or ICC, approved projects for ten railroad crossings in the Peoria metro area. These projects will improve highway-rail safety through Stipulated Agreements 2291 and 2292. Both “require new automatic flashing light signals and gate installations at 10 Iowa Interstate Railroad crossings in Marshall and Peoria Counties,” according to the ICC

The project includes improvements made at “County Line Road near Bureau; at Lincoln Street in Henry; at Main Street, Edmund Street, Williams Street, and Western Avenue in Marshall County, Illinois; at East Fairview Street and East Resthaven Road near Mossville; at Detweiler Golf Road in the City of Peoria; and at Marine Drive in Peoria.”

The overall estimated costs for the improvements at the six Marshall County crossings and the four Peoria County crossings are $1,950,721 and $1,273,200 respectively. The ICC has recommended that the GCPF, or Grade Crossing Protection Fund, pay for 95% of those costs but not to exceed $1,853,184 and $1,209,540 respectively. For the remainder of the projects’ costs, the Iowa Interstate Railroad will be responsible. The Railroad will also be responsible for future signals and circuitry maintenance.

Michael T. Carrigan, ICC Commissioner, said: “Updating Illinois’ existing infrastructure around railroad tracks makes it easier and safer for anyone in the Peoria Metro Area to get to where they need to be. The projects like the ones in Marshall and Peoria Counties are an important investment toward keeping our railways safe for all who use them.”
