MTA Construction & Development Honored for 2023 Projects

NEW YORK CITY – The MTA Construction & Development was honored with 21 awards for projects in 2023.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has announced MTA Construction & Development projects have been honored for “innovative design, accessibility improvements, system modernization, station beautification, and infrastructure maintenance” in 2023. The agency has received 21 awards in total. The infrastructure work “represents more than 80% of the 2020-2024 Capital Plan,” according to the agency. 

MTA Construction & Development President Jamie Torres-Springer has stated that “C&D has been delivering projects better, faster, and cheaper thanks to project management reform and innovative contracting tools like project bundling, and this hard work is not going unnoticed. . . I am proud of the many awards of recognition that our projects have garnered in 2023 and look forward to achieving even more in 2024.”

The Municipal Art Society awarded the MASterworks Award for Best New Infrastructure to the Grand Central Madison and 42 St Connection. In addition, The Municipal Engineers of New York awarded Grand Central Madison as the Municipal Project of the Year.

The American Council of Engineering New York Chapter recognized nine projects. The awards are categorized by three categories: Diamond, Platinum, and Gold. 

Diamond:

  1. “The rehabilitation of the upper-level approach to the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge
    1. This project also received the National ACEC Crystal Award for Engineering Excellence.
  2. “Design-build projects at the Hug Carey and Queens Midtown tunnels

Platinum:

  • “The Harrison Place Substation Design-Build project
  • “National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Categorical Exclusions for the Park Avenue Viaduct Replacement

Gold:

  • “Work to mitigate flooding at the 148 St Yard
  • “Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) upgrades at the 42 St Shuttle as part of the 42 St Connection
  • “Electrical resiliency design-build work on the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge
  • “Replacement work at LIRR Huntington Station overpass
  • “Rehabilitation work on the Rutgers Tube

The LIRR Concourse at Penn Station also received recognition from the Engineering News Record (ENR) with the New York Regional Best Projects awards. The LIRR Elmont Station received the Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award from New York State Society of Professional Engineering.

The MTA goes on to report that tower elevator rehabilitation work at the Marine Parkway Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge and the Long Island Rail Road Third Track Project were honored with Excellence in Partnering awards by the Associated General Contractors of New York State.
