SONOMA COUNTY, Calif. - The California Transportation Foundation (CTF) has selected the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) Windsor Station as its Rail and Transit Project of the year.
The project expands passenger service in the area and advances multimodal transportation along the North Bay corridor. According to STV, the project’s design partner, the annual awards program identifies projects across the state of California that deliver benefits through its planning, engineering, and value to the public. STV and SMART worked with Stacy Whitbeck and Modern Railway Systems as project partners. All were honored at the CTF Annual Awards gala that occurred in San Jose, California.
The overall project sought to complete a 3.2-mile extension of the SMART commuter rail system that expanded service from the Sonoma County Airport into downtown Windsor. The project included new multimodal rail station, reconstructed track, five rebuilt bridges, two pedestrian bridges, upgraded grade crossings, an underpass for pedestrians, and a 2.6-mile pathway for walkers and cyclists. For the project, STV provided engineering services and roadway and grade-crossing design as well as work on station architecture, drainage and site systems, ADA-compliant access, and upgrades to safety.
The project also earned other awards, namely the Honor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of California (ACEC California) and the Outstanding Transportation Project of the Year by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) San Francisco Section, as reported by RT&S in October 2025.
