ATLANTA –– On Thursday, June 11, a Norfolk Southern train derailed near Wartburg, Tenn., which is just west of Knoxville.
The NTSB says that 26 cars were involved, and County officials said about 4 or 5 cars had caught fire. There were no injuries, but the incident prompted officials to evacuate residents within one square mile of the site, which involved 12 homes. However, the evacuation order was lifted at around 9:00 p.m.
The NTSB announced early Friday morning that it was sending an investigation team to the derailment site: “NTSB is sending a team to investigate the June 11, 2026, Norfolk Southern freight train derailment near Wartburg, Tennessee. Approximately 26 rail cars were involved, including ethanol tank cars. Several cars were breached, resulting in a fire.”
