City of Detroit, Michigan DOT and Michigan Central Join to Provide $40 Million for Research On Proposed Development of Passenger Hub Near Michigan Central Station

DETROIT, Mich. – Michigan Central is economic and transportation development organization headquartered on the campus of the recently restored Michigan Central Station in Detroit.
This week, Michigan Central has joined with the Michigan Department of Transportation and the City of Detroit to put forth plans to commit $40 million for engineering and research studies around the possibility of developing a multimodal transportation hub, close to the Michigan Central Station, within a 30-acre tract of land known as the Michigan Central Innovation District.
The seed funding for the engineering and research work is a $10 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration, and the remaining $30 million will be provided by the state of Michigan. The transportation hub would provide facilities for intercity bus and passenger rail service.
According to Engineering News Record –– Midwest, Michigan’s governor, Gretchen Whitmer (D) said this effort “lays the foundation for a new multimodal transportation hub that will grow our regional economy,” and said is a needed move to enhance “mobility and opportunity.”
