ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Maryland Governor West Moore toured the future Purple Line 16th Street - Woodside Station where the final segment of rail is installed.

According to the governor’s office, this final segment installation marks the completion of 193,100 feet of track that connect Prince George’s and Montgomery counties. The Purple Line links a 16.2-mile corridor from New Carrollton to Bethesda. Crews will continue construction throughout the rest of the year, focusing on station structural elements, art installations, landscaping, and signal controls for train and traffic. It is slated to open in late 2027.

$3 million has been committed as an investment by the governor’s administration and was included in the Fiscal Year 2027 budget. These funds go toward economic development by supporting exterior upgrades for businesses located within a half-mile of Purple Line stations in Montgomery County. During the “Delivering for Maryland” tour in Montgomery County, Governor Moore was joined by state transportation officials and local elected leaders.

“In Maryland, our people have one very simple question for all of their elected officials: are you going to do what you say you’re going to do? People in Montgomery County have been asking that question about the Purple Line for over a decade, and today, we are delivering,” said Governor Moore. “By completing over 16 miles of track from New Carrollton to Bethesda and putting more than 2,000 people to work, we are keeping our promise, strengthening Maryland’s economic competitiveness, and creating communities that thrive.”

“Milestones like this don’t just happen, they are earned through years of planning, partnership and an unwavering commitment to deliver for the people of Maryland,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary Katie Thomson. “When the Moore-Miller Administration first took office in January 2023, the Purple Line was just under 50% complete. Now the project is nearly 90% complete. I am excited to come back in the not-too-distant future to celebrate the Purple Line’s opening, carrying passengers, strengthening our economy, and improving the quality of life across the region.”

“Placement of the last rail represents more than construction progress,” said Maryland Transit Administrator Holly Arnold. “This milestone represents our commitment to expanding mobility so that more people can access jobs, education, essential services, and opportunity.”
