Passenger Service Resumes in San Clemente; OCTA Seeking Long-Term Solutions

SAN CLEMENTE – Two months after a landslide halted passenger service at Mariposa Point, OCTA announces the completion of a catchment wall has allowed regular passenger service to resume.

Passenger service has resumed normal operations in San Clemente. According to OCTA, this comes after it was able to complete a 200-foot-long catchment wall at Mariposa Point. Looking toward long-term solutions, OCTA says, “work continues to address other potential problem areas along the coastal rail line and to further study longer-term solutions for protecting the track that connects passengers and freight from San Diego to Orange County and farther north.” In addition, OCTA will work with local, state, and federal officials on solutions to protect the rail corridor long-term. The first of two studies is currently underway to achieve this. Through the OCTA-led Orange County Coastal Rail Resiliency Study, there have been listening sessions with the public. 

On April 11^th, a Zoom meeting will be held with the public at 5 p.m. At San Clemente City Hall on May 30^th at 5 p.m., there will be an in-person meeting to gather public feedback. 

In order for passenger service to resume, OCTA and Metrolink worked with the LOSSAN Rail Corridor Agency, which operates Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner service. This comes two months after a January 24^th landslide halted operations on the track.
