The San Jose-to-Merced project section of the California high-speed rail system will provide a critical rail link between the San Francisco Bay Area and the Central Valley.

The alignment runs through or near the cities of Santa Clara, San Jose, Morgan Hill, Gilroy, and Los Banos. The project section modernizes the rail corridor between San Jose and Gilroy, allowing for electrified Caltrain and high-speed rail services, and includes more than 15 miles of tunnels through the Pacheco Pass.
