Jim Morrison, P.E., P.Eng., joins STV as vice president, engineering chief for tunneling and geotechnical engineering

Jim Morrison, P.E., P.Eng., has joined STV as a vice president and engineering chief for tunneling and geotechnical engineering. In this role, Morrison will serve as a project lead and senior advisor on projects with geotechnical and tunneling elements.

“Jim’s vast experience with subterranean projects will benefit our entire practice and clients across the nation,” said Frank Pepe, Jr., P.E., STV senior vice president and national director of tunneling and geotechnical engineering. “He is a global leader in underground structures and deep foundations design and construction management, and we are proud to have him join our team.”

Based in Michigan, Morrison has more than 39 years of geotechnical and civil engineering experience supporting tunnels, bridges, dams, hydroelectric facilities, highways, deep excavations, transit and water/sewer systems.

Prior to joining STV, Morrison served as an executive for an international engineering consulting group and engineering services manager for a major construction contractor. He has led teams performing expert and quality reviews, design and forensic evaluations and actively participates on dispute review boards. With particular expertise in the design-build project delivery method, Morrison has participated in some of the most challenging tunneling projects in North America, including Rio Piedras Subway Section 7 for Tren Urbano in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Devil’s Slide Twin Tunnels in the San Francisco Bay Area for California Department of Transportation and the award-winning Mud Mountain Dam 9-Foot Tunnel Rearmoring in Washington for the United States Army Corps of Engineers.

Morrison earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from Michigan Technological University. He has written numerous technical papers and has presented keynote addresses to conferences around the world. Morrison served as president of the Deep Foundations Institute as well as the Cleveland, Ohio Section and Northwest Michigan Branch of American Society of Civil Engineers.
