MISSISSAUGA, Ontario – Metrolinx gives an update on its Hazel McCallion line including the installation of the push box.

Progress has been made on Metrolinx’s Hazel McCallion line. In what Metrolinx calls a “Canadian first”, a concrete passageway was pushed under the Lakeshore West rail by crew using “a revolutionary engineering method known as the Verona System.”

The Verona System was a technique designed by Petrucco and introduced to help built LRT under the GO tracks at Port Credit Go, and it reduces “impact on train schedules, work time at the station, noise and pollution.”

The push box measures at 46 meters long, weights around 6,000 tons, and incorporates a partition to separate the northbound and southbound trains. It establishes the “tunnel through which future light rail vehicles will travel in and out of Port Credit Station once the Hazel McCallion Line is in service.” Before the push box was installed, prepatory work detailed the “shoring and excavation of the east side of the south parking lot at Port Credit GO, and the installation of the thrust block and launch slab which were used during the push box installation.” Before, work on the push box entailed the excavation of over 5,000 cubic meters, the removal of 4 rows of micro-piles, and jacking the final 30 meters.

Aside from the installation of the push box, crews have been working on platform level slab concrete work. This “includes provisions for mechanical and electrical systems, future elevators, and a future tunnel ventilation system.”
