BALTIMORE - CSX continues work on the Howard Street Tunnel. On July 7, FRA Officials took a tour of the tunnel project.
Officials from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) took a tour of the Howard Street Tunnel modernization project earlier this month led by CSX Senior Director of Mid-Atlantic Construction Brandon Knapp and CSX Assistant Vice President of Government Affairs Stephen Flippin.
The project seeks to upgrade the century-old tunnel to allow for taller freight cars and subsequently enhanced service. As part of a larger partnership with the USDOT, the state of Maryland, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and stakeholders, the project will allow this double-stack service to “strengthen connections” from the Port of Baltimore to Midwest markets. Along with unlocking vertical clearance, crews will address 22 obstructions along the corridor.
In a post on LinkedIn, CSX AVP Flippin said, “Increasing efficiencies helps us better serve our customers and communities, and keeps America competitive. . . We appreciate the continued support of our federal, state, and local partners.”
A list of the clearance obstructions, scope of work, and locations in Maryland and Pennsylvania can be found on the Department of Transportation’s Port Administration page for the Port of Baltimore.
