Watch: Cog railway clears snow on track with new rotary plow

A new rotary snowplow clears the tracks of the Broadmoor Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway.

The Broadmoor Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway (MPPR) new rotary snow plow, Unit 30, was clearing snow for the rebuilt cog railway for the first time on April 9.

The new rotary plow, train sets and rebuild and renaissance of the famed cog railway (one of only two in the U.S.) has cost upwards of $100 million. The new snowblower, produced by Zaugg in Eggiwil, Switzerland, will have the capability of cutting through snow drifts up to 10 ft tall and 20 ft wide. The 47.2-in.-diam. cutting reels can cut through 4,200 tons of snow per hour and have the ability to blow snow 50-100 ft off the line.
