Union Pacific Railroad will perform $18 million of work on a rail line between Paola and Parsons, KS. The UP-funded project began September 16 and is scheduled to be completed by mid-December.

The railroad will replace 77,000 crossties, install 39,200 tons of ballast and renew the surfaces at 118 crossings. Crews will also replace nearly 12 miles of rail in various locations between Paola and Parsons.

The project is one of nearly 1,500 Union Pacific will complete across its 32,000-mile network this year to help improve train operating efficiency, reduce motorist wait times at crossings and enhance safety. Earlier this year, the railroad said it was investing $8 million in its line between Herington and Whitewater, KS, as well as $20 million in its line between Topeka and Kansas City.

“Union Pacific helps businesses connect with consumers, suppliers and markets across the nation and around the world,” said Donna Kush, Union Pacific vice president – Public Affairs, Northern Region. “In addition to helping move our customers’ goods safely and efficiently, our investments support communities by reducing traffic congestion, facilitating industrial development and promoting economic expansion.”
