ETOBICOKE NORTH, Ontario - Metrolinx is partnering with the Ontario government and Woodbine Entertainment Group to build a new transit station.
According to Metrolinx, the new station will be on the Kitchener GO Line in north Etobicoke. Construction work is underway on the Woodbine GO Station located between Etobicoke North and Milton GO stations. This will connect passengers to GO Transit and UP Express services. Metrolinx is currently working to expand two-way GO train service on the Kitchener Line, and the Woodbine GO Station “could see trains arrive at the station as frequently as every 15 minutes during the busiest travel hours.”
The Woodbine Station, expected to serve 7,000 riders daily, will replace the Etobicoke North station as well as include a fourth track and upgrades to signals. The benefits to the new Woodbine Station include a new building, new rail island platforms, pedestrian bridges, and dedicated GO parking. Additionally, it will include a bus loop, passenger waiting area, and a multi-use path and direct road for bicycle access.
Crews began early construction along the corridor by clearing the area and removing overhead utilities. Crews also began grading and excavation work. Metrolinx states that it awarded a contract this month for the next phase of construction that entails “deep sewer and underground utility works.” This work will reportedly realign Entrance Road and prepare for a “future track diversion to accommodate the platform at Woodbine station.”
