NEW YORK CITY - The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced its Valley Stream Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Station has been renovated.

The project, including more than $12 million in funding, sought to renovate and modernize the station and was completed on schedule and under budget, according to the release. During the project, crews worked, using a design-build contracting technique, to improve accessibility and bring the station up to a state-of-good-repair. The technique allows a single private-sector consortium to undertake both design and construction of a project from beginning to end, says the MTA. The project bundle seeks to add seven stations to its list of accessible stations along the LIRR.

Crews worked to replace the escalator and install a new staircase and elevator. Additionally, crews installed an elevator machine room, elevator vestibules, and made service upgrades. Elsewhere, lighting was improved, and crosswalks, CCTV cameras, and parking spaces were added. Structurally, crews worked to paint steel columns and girders, install signage, replace tactile strips, upgraded the public address system, and made structural crack and spall repairs. Platform markers and rubbing edge boards were also replaced.

“The new MTA is all about results. 137,000 riders use this station every month, and we’re thrilled to deliver these long-awaited upgrades,” said MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber. “There’s more to come as part of the 2025-2029 Capital Plan’s $6 billion investment in LIRR projects.”

“Valley Stream is one of the LIRR’s busiest stations, and we were able to perform major upgrades and state of good repair work with minimal impact to our customers,” said LIRR President Rob Free. “So much of this project was completed by our in-house workforce, and I’m looking forward to more projects like these to improve the customer experience at more LIRR stations throughout the system.”

“In addition to accessibility upgrades, crews made customer focused enhancements like new security cameras and updated signage to improve visibility and safety,” said MTA Construction & Development President Jamie Torres-Springer. “By using new and innovative methods, the MTA is able to deliver projects better, faster and cheaper than ever before.”
