PITTSBURGH - Norfolk Southern begins construction on the Allegheny Commons Pedestrian Bridge replacement project.

The bridge dates back to the early 1900s, but it has not been in use in more than a decade. In 2013, the bridge was removed due to its condition. The bridge replacement will sit above NS’ Fort Wayne Line and Conemaugh Line, reconnecting the east and west portions of a park space in Pittsburgh and improving walkability in said park. This work comes as part of Norfolk Southern’s more broad infrastructure work in Pittsburgh, says the Class I.

Throughout the month, crews started with concrete work on bridge supports which will be completed early 2027. Over the course of the project, NS will work with PennDOT, the City of Pittsburgh, and various other agencies, thus aligning its improvement goals with the priorities of nearby communities. The Class I said the project is more than a bridge replacement, it is a “project that reconnects neighborhoods, improves mobility, and supports a more efficient, modern rail network.”
