WASHINGTON, D.C.––POTUS 47 on Aug. 27 fired Surface Transportation Board member Robert Primus, The Wall Street Journal reported Aug. 28, noting that the STB is “the railroad regulator weighing the proposed megamerger between Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern.”

Union Pacific + Norfolk Southern: It’s Official

OMAHA and ATLANTA –– The speculation is over: Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern at 7:00 AM EDT announced their agreement to, in a combined cash and stock transaction valued at more than $250 billion, merge and create the first U.S. transcontinental railroad. Union Pacific is the acquiring company; the Norfolk Southern name and iconic “Thoroughbred” prancing horse logo on a black locomotive carbody will fade into history as another fallen flag—just like all prior UP acquisitions (Missouri Pacific, Western Pacific, Missouri–Kansas–Texas, Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific, Chicago & North Western, Southern Pacific).

Union Pacific Receives NRHS-Railway Age-RT&S Historic Preservation Award

CHICAGO ––The National Railway Historical Society, Railway Age and Railway Track & Structures have awarded Union Pacific’s heritage program their second annual Historic Preservation Award, which recognizes and honors a North American common-carrier railroad for a historically significant preservation project.

INRD President and CEO Joe Gioe – RAIL GROUP ON AIR

The Indiana Rail Road (INRD) named Joe Gioe President and CEO in mid-August 2024. A career railroader with 20 years of industry experience, he has held leadership positions at two Class I railroads, with most of his tenure at BNSF, where he was twice named Employee of the Year for intermodal train execution and delivery of major infrastructure projects in Transportation and Service Design. He also served as Assistant Vice President Network Optimization and Vice President Transportation at Norfolk Southern.

NS Fires Shaw, Nag; Names George CEO (Updated with Commentary and Analysis)

ATLANTA –– Less than a week after a still-unknown person or persons at Norfolk Southern contacted CNBC and other media outlets alleging that President and CEO Alan H. Shaw was engaging in an “inappropriate workplace relationship” with another employee—setting off an internal investigation—the NS Board of Directors fired him and the company’s Executive Vice President Corporate Affairs, Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary Nabanita C. Nag.

Reports: Shaw Departing NS Due to Misconduct Probe

ATLANTA –– The Wall Street Journal has reported that Norfolk Southern President and CEO Alan Shaw is expected to step down from his role amid an investigation into allegations of potential misconduct—“an inappropriate workplace relationship.” Various news reports, beginning with CNBC, said that the NS board of directors had hired outside legal counsel to investigate the matter; the railroad has confirmed that.

FreightCar America Adds Tank Car Rebuilds to Portfolio

ATLANTA –– Tank car issues are not usual topics for RT&S. However, given the years-long concerns about DOT-111 tank cars that remain on the railroad today, and the urgency around upgrading them to DOT-117R standards, I felt our readers would be interested in this development.
