BNSF’s Wilmar Bypass Receives 2023 America’s Transportation Award

WILMAR, Minn. – BNSF announced its rail bypass project that was completed last fall was recognized as a regional 2023 America’s Transportation Award Winner.

On LinkedInBNSF announced its rail bypass project that was completed last fall was recognized as a regional 2023 America’s Transportation Award Winner. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) bestowed the award.

The Wilmar Bypass consists of a 2.8-mile section of new track and a wye, “a triangle of track used for turning trains.” Before the bypass was constructed, crews travelled to the center of town to get to the Wilmar terminal in order to change direction. Now, the bypass allows for more efficient service and fewer occupied crossings.

Minnesota Department of Transportation District 8 division engineer, Jon Huseby, said: “Each organization contributed to the project’s ultimate success and impressive results in safety and rail efficiencies, as well as providing a foundation for economic development.”
