ATLANTA –– Norfolk Southern yesterday released a new "Thoroughbred, Thank A Railroader" paint scheme for one locomotive, which is already in service.

This new paint scheme continues two recent traditions at the railroad.

First, periodically introducing a special paint scheme on a locomotive to celebrate or recognize something. Readers will recall that in 2012, NS painted 20 brand new locomotives in the paint schemes of predecessor railroads, and are referred to as NS Heritage units. You can read more about that program here. Several of the locomotives have been repainted in the heritage scheme due to accidents or wear. As far as we know here at RT&S, all 20 locomotives are still in service and still wearing their heritage paint scheme.

Second, NS president Alan Shaw and his leadership team have worked to develop a more collaborative relationship with craft railroaders. Site visits and other programs, including the painting of this locomotive, have been implemented to deliver the message that craft railroaders who are running trains and repairing the infrastructure every day are appreciated.

In a press release, NS said the following:

Norfolk Southern is proud to introduce our all-new Thoroughbred Locomotive, a tribute to our railroaders, and inspired by the grit, heart, and drive that they put forward every day.

The weight of the world moves on rail — but it doesn’t move itself. It takes the hard work, dedication, and commitment of our railroaders to safely deliver the goods and materials essential to our daily lives.

Thank you, Team NS, for keeping us rolling and powering the US and global economy forward, 24/7, 365.
