Freightwaves is reporting that one of the presentations at this week’s Railway Interchange meeting in Minneapolis focused on the dynamics of shipper, freight railroad, and investor relationships.  In a paper prepared by the Center for Railway Education at Michigan State University and Maine Pointe, a logistics consulting firm, the authors argue that the relationships between these three groups is flawed.

“Despite substantial changes in the supply chain and transportation landscape, alignment between carriers, shippers and the investment community remains dysfunctional and is not set up for 21st century transportation needs,” their paper says.

The paper points out that the tremendous focus on the operating ratio diverts attention away from ensuring that customers receive excellent service.
