Just a few months after opening, the Carolina Connector intermodal transportation facility is already making a dent in the supply chain issue.

The facility, located in Edgecombe County, N.C., was created from a public-private partnership between North Carolina and CSX Corp. The Class 1 contributed $40 million to the project and is operating the Connector. North Carolina provided $118 million in funding for the facility.

The Carolina Connector has eased freight tension at the Port of Savannah and connects the Port of Wilmington and eastern U.S. ports to their final destinations. Unclogging the supply chain at the Port of Savannah could not come at a better time. On Feb. 9, the port erected a fifth pop-up container yard. Another byproduct of the Connector is the Wilmington Midwest Express, which services a five-day connection to Chicago and northwest Ohio and a seven-day connection to St. Louis.

More and more businesses also are interested in the Carolina Connector, which will only provide a boom to the North Carolina economy.
