Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWI) announced last week that the shortline railroad is opening a Choice Terminal™ bulk transfer facility along its San Joaquin Valley Railroad Co. (SJVR) subsidiary in Millux, Calif.

Operated by GWI railroads, Choice Terminals transfers bulk materials, including agricultural, industrial and petroleum products, between railcars and trucks. Officials said this allows customers not located directly near a railroad to mitigate transportation costs by using rail.

The new SJVR Choice Terminal is located about 20 miles southwest of Bakersfield, Calif., and is near Interstate 5. Initially serving clay customers, the facility accommodates 20 railcars and features an on-site truck scale for weighing as well as flexible operating hours, a statement said.

The SJVR spans 371 miles and provides customers with access to the North American rail network via multiple interchanges with Class 1 railroads BNSF and Union Pacific.

“We look forward to providing safe and efficient service to businesses in the San Joaquin Valley, Los Angeles Basin and Inland Empire that are looking to more efficiently manage inventory and lower transportation costs by eliminating the need for long-haul trucks,” said SJVR President Brad Ovitt.
