PUCO Approves Rail Crossing Safety Upgrades

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) approved rail crossing safety upgrades in Tuscarawas and Muskingum counties.

According to PUCO, Columbus & Ohio River Railroad (CUOH) will perform safety upgrades at the S. Lake Street grade crossing in Tuscarawas County. By July 1, 2026, CUOH will install flashing lights and gates with surface reconstruction. The project will be funded with $489,073 from federal sources. Additionally, Owens Illinois Glass (OIG) will install flashing lights and gates at the Pershing Road Pine Street grade crossing. $750,260 in federal funds will go toward the safety upgrades.

During these projects, PUCO says funding for safety improvements such as rumble strips, improved signage, etc. will come from the State Grade Crossing Safety Fund. These funds will not exceed $5,000 per project.
