KANSAS CITY, Kan. –– Union Pacific recently announced the opening of it's newest intermodal terminal in Kansas City.

In pursuit of growing intermodal traffic, Union Pacific recently opened its fourth intermodal terminal since 2021. It is located in Kansas City, Kan., one of the east-west gateways on the nation’s rail system.

Named the Kansas City Intermodal Terminal (KCIT), it is located on the west side of Kansas City. Readers may remember that half of Kansas City is located in Missouri, and the other half in Kansas.

Kenny Rocker, Executive Vice President of Marketing and Sales at Union Pacific, said that “this new terminal reflects our commitment to building for the future and providing our customers with convenient and cost-effective access to the U.S. supply chain. Our customers want faster, more reliable freight options and this terminal delivers.”

While some intermodal rail terminals in the United States focus on either domestic traffic or international traffic, KCIT will handle both. Traffic through this terminal will include consumer goods, refrigerated products, containerized grain, and auto parts.

Union Pacific also reported that the new terminal has room for expansion, significantly adding to its local intermodal capacity in Kansas City.
