ICC approves safety improvements at five Illinois grade crossings

February 14, 2001 The Illinois Commerce Commission has granted approval for safety improvements at five grade crossings around the state. ICC OKed the installation of new automatic flashing light signals and gates and roadway approach grade improvements at the N. 9th Avenue highway-rail grade crossing of Norfolk Southern track near Litchfield, Montgomery County The total estimated cost for the new automatic warning devices is $280,806. The Grade Crossing Protection Fund will be used to pay 95 percent of the signal installation costs, not to exceed $266,766. NS will pay all remaining installation costs, as well as all future operating and maintenance costs related to the new automatic warning devices. All work is to be completed by Jan. 6, 2011.

ICC granted
approval for installation of automatic flashing light signals and gates at the
Tynan Road highway-rail grade crossing of BNSF track near Mazon, Grundy County.
The estimated cost to install automatic flashing light signals and gates is
$438,831. The GCPF will be used to pay approximately 93 percent of the warning
device installation costs, not to exceed $406,889. Mazon Township Road District
has agreed to contribute $10,000 towards the project. BNSF will pay all
remaining installation costs, as well as all future operating and maintenance
costs. All work is to be completed by Jan. 6, 2011.

ICC approved
the installation of automatic flashing light signals and roadway approach grade
improvements at the N. 23rd Avenue highway-rail grade crossing of the NS track near
Raymond, Montgomery County. The total estimated cost for the new automatic
warning devices is $258,926. The GCPF will be used to pay 95 percent of the
signal installation costs, not to exceed $245,980. NS will pay all remaining
installation costs, as well as all future operating and maintenance costs
related to the new automatic warning devices. All work is to be completed by Jan.
21, 2011.

ICC authorized
installation of new automatic flashing light signals and gates controlled by
constant warning time circuitry and improvement of the west roadway approach
grade at the South 4th Street/300N highway-rail grade crossing of the Illinois
Central track near Sigel, Shelby County. The total estimated cost for the
signal improvements is $174,050. The GCPF will be used to pay 95 percent of the
installation costs, not to exceed $165,348. IC will pay all remaining
installation costs, as well as all future operating and maintenance costs. All
work is to be completed by Jan. 6, 2011.

ICC OKed the
installation of automatic flashing light signals and gates at the Airport Road highway-rail
grade crossing of BNSF track near Savanna, Carroll County. The estimated cost
to install automatic flashing light signals and gates is $258,505. The GCPF
will be used to pay 95 percent of the warning device installation costs, not to
exceed $245,580. BNSF will pay all remaining installation costs, as well as all
future operating and maintenance costs. All work is to be completed by Jan. 21,
2011.

Project selection and
management of GCPF highway-rail safety projects include safety improvements
such as the installation of new warning systems, highway approach improvements
and the construction/reconstruction of grade separation structures. The
Commission administers the GCPF, which is funded by motor fuel tax money
designated for rail safety improvements. The General Assembly appropriates $42
million annually for GCPF projects.
