RT&S Virtual Conference Speaker Spotlight ––BNSF’s Todd Kuhn

ATLANTA –– Railway Track & Structure’s Virtual Conference on Track Geometry and Rail Flaw Detection will air on Thursday, July 9 from 2:00pm to 3:30pm EDT. One of our guest speakers will be Todd Kuhn, Assistant Vice President and Chief Engineer of System Maintenance & Planning at BNSF.

Todd Kuhn has served in this role since 2024, and we are very glad to welcome him to our virtual conference next month. During the past two years, Todd has driven advances in track maintenance efficiency and productivity across the engineering department. Todd joined BNSF in 2006, and is a graduate of Penn State University with a BS degree in civil engineering. Todd is also a licensed engineer, and he is based at BNSF headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas.

During his time at BNSF, Todd has held many roles of increasing responsibility within Engineering including division engineer, director of engineering services, director of engineering certification, director of engineering safety, general director of line maintenance, and general director of maintenance planning

During our virtual conference, Todd will focus on the importance of and methods around sustaining and improving track geometry, along with the railroad’s work on developing automated track inspection (ATI).

We’ll also hear how BNSF’s innovative “Onboard Defect Identification & Notification (ODIN)” and “Track Health Optical Recognition (THOR)” track inspection technologies helped the railroad to report its safest year ever in 2025.
