MTA to Complete Renovations at Three Stations

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced on Feb. 17 that the agency has planned station renovations at its Cypress Hills, 75 St–Elderts Lane on the J and Z and 85 St on the J in Brooklyn and Queens.
The three elevated stations will undergo necessary state-of-good-repair work, accessibility enhancements, and customer safety upgrades, MTA said. The modifications are set to take place in stages to lessen the impact on services, and the agency anticipates that the work will be finished in the third quarter of 2025.
“J train customers in Brooklyn and Queens will have a lot to look forward to when this project is completed,” said MTA Construction and Development President Jamie Torres-Springer. “These renovations will bring vital improvements to three stations, enhancing safety and accessibility while ensuring these stations are in a state of good repair for decades to come.”
Beginning on Feb. 27, Queens-bound trains will bypass 75 St – Elderts Lane. Work will begin on the Manhattan-bound platform in the late summer of 2023. Crews will start project work at 85 St – Forest Parkway on the Queens-bound side in the winter months of 2024, and work will take place on the Manhattan-bound platform in the summer of 2024.
The three stations will see a number of changes as a result of the station restoration. In order to provide weather protection, stations will have updated platforms, structural improvements to the mezzanine levels, and extended canopies over steps. Windscreens will be renovated, and MTA Arts & Design will install laminated glass artwork, a release said.
The rehabilitation of platform components will also be part of the upgrades, including the installation of detectable warning strips at platform edges and the reduction of space between platforms and trains.
While work is being done at the three above-ground stations, protective shielding will be built to ensure community safety. The MTA also has environmental mitigation strategies to address issues with public safety.
Project work hours are set for Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The MTA said the agency and its contractors will also coordinate with local businesses to prioritize pedestrian safety and mitigate impacts to business during the renovation process.
