WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Office of Research, Development and Technology released a technical report on ballast and subgrade interactions.

From April 2021 to April 2023, the FRA sponsored a research team from Pennsylvania State University to study tamping maintenance. After conducting field tests on Norfolk Southern’s line in Tunnelhill, Pennsylvania; Bellwood, Pennsylvania; and Chesapeake, Virginia, researchers examined the “impact of various tamping parameters on railway ballast performance” by using SmartRock sensors that were embedded in ballast.

The team analyzed stress changes and movement to “establish the relationship” between ballast performance and tamping behavior, and an energy analysis revealed that the energy absorbed by ballast is “a reliable indicator for assessing ballast stability.” The study reinforces the necessity of fine-tuning tamping parameters based on different ballast conditions. The technical report from the FRA is reproduced below.
