Rehabilitation work has begun on New York's Metro-North Mount Vernon East, Pelham and New Rochelle stations and will begin next summer at Larchmont, Mamaroneck and Harrison stations in a major upgrade that will bring these six facilities to a state of good repair over the next two years.

“Metro-North customers deserve pleasant, clean and comfortable stations and we are delighted to begin this work,” said Metro-North President Howard Permut. “If folks want to know what’s in store, look to Rye and Port Chester, which underwent a similar rehabilitation project that was completed in spring 2011. Customers love the new look and fresh paint and the platforms will last another 25 years.”

Major work will be done on the platform superstructure including the double “T” beams, bearing pads, concrete piers, concrete footings, edge board and wearing surface, as well as the installation of tactile warning strips.

Other station elements that are slated for rehabilitation include platform canopy structures, pigeon-proofing, canopy and platform lighting, platform guardrail replacement, overpass and underpass structures, stairs, ramps, the public address system, visual message signage, wire mesh benches and bicycle racks. And everything will get a fresh coat of paint.

Rehabilitation activities will be performed under three separate construction contracts of which two are via the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Small Business Mentoring Program (SBMP), established to teach small business subcontractors how to become general contractors.

The largest contract for the six-station rehabilitation portion was awarded in July to Andron Construction Corp., of Goldens Bridge, N.Y.

Installation of platform guardrails at the Mount Vernon East, Pelham and New Rochelle stations is being done by Champion Construction Services Corp., of Forest Hills, N.Y. Installation of platform guardrails at the Mamaroneck and Harrison stations is being done by Innovative Electric of New York, Inc., of Mount Vernon, N.Y. (Larchmont is not scheduled for guardrail replacement.)

The entire $36,750,000 project is slated for completion in August 2014.
