Work to begin on 14-month BWI rail station overhaul

The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) is renovating and expanding the BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport rail station in an effort to improve service for Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) Train passengers.
The $4.7 million renovation will entail the expansion of the waiting area, the addition of new ticketing facilities, a concession area and restrooms. Construction is set to kick off Aug. 27 and will last 14 months.
“Our customers truly will appreciate the new features in the renovated MARC station at BWI,” said Andrea Farmer, MDOT MTA’s director of MARC Train. “We will provide not only a more aesthetically pleasing station, but a much more functional facility to best meet the needs of our riders.”
A temporary station at the site will continue to provide MARC and Amtrak customers with ticketing services, a waiting area and restrooms.
A new Americans with Disabilities Act compliant ramp will also be added near the temporary station to allow proper access to the temporary station.
The station will remain open for both train and bus service throughout the construction period, officials said.
MDOT MTA operates LocalLink and commuter buses, Light RailLink, Metro SubwayLink, MARC Train service and a paratransit system.
