ONTARIO – STRABAG Inc. was awarded the $255 million contract for the second underground segment of the extension.

Infrastructure Ohio (IO) and Metrolinx awarded a $255 million contract to STRABAG Inc. to design, build, and finance of a second underground segment of the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension. This includes a 500-metre tunnel that will connect the “existing terminus of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT at Mount Dennis Station to a portal east of Jane Street where the line will run on an elevated guideway.”

According to IO, the STRABAG team includes:

  • Developer: STRABAG Inc.
  • Design: WSP Canada Inc. and Dr. G. Sauer & Partners Corporation
  • Construction: STRABAG Inc.
  • Financial Advisor: STRABAG Inc.

STRABAG Inc. submitted a proposal after the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension Advance Tunnel 2 project held a procurement process. The project will be delivered through IO’s P3 model, “which transfers appropriate risks associated with design, construction, and financing of the project to the private sector.”

The Eglinton Crosstown West Extension Advance Tunnel Contract 2 work includes: “1) design and supply of mining and tunneling equipment; 2) detailed design and construction of the launch and extraction shafts and tunnel portal east of Jane Street; 3) detailed design and construction of the tunnel between the portal and Mount Dennis Station using the sequential excavation method; 4) modifications at Mount Dennis Station to accommodate extended Eglinton Crosstown LRT service; and 5) utility work and road modifications along Eglinton Avenue West to accommodate construction activities.” Metrolinx has said that work is currently underway to prepare for major construction on this segment, and construction is expected to start in late 2024.

Additionally, Metrolinx gave an update on tunneling work on the underground segment of the line between Renforth Drive and Scarlett Road. Work has entered its final phase with twin tunnel boring machines excavating the line. Each TBM (Renny and Rexy) has completed more than 5km of its roughly 6km journey. Once they reach the extraction shaft at Scarlett Road, each will be disassembled and brought to the surface. Those interested can follow the TMB tracker on Metrolinx here.
