TORONTO – Metrolinx is making improvements around its Milliken GO Station in northeast Toronto.

Metrolinx is making improvements around its Milliken GO Station in northeast Toronto. The station improvements include a new rail-over-road overpass, or grade separation, at Steeles Avenue East between Kennedy Road and Midland Avenue.

This grade separation will allow the rails to be separate from the road, and vehicles can pass without having to stop and wait for passing trains. A previous Davenport Diamond grade separation was commissioned for the Barrie Line, and there was a completed grade separation near the Rutherford GO Station last year.

Metrolinx detailed the construction for the overpass near Milliken Go Station as a “top-down” style construction. According to the agency, this “accelerates the process and involves constructing the bridge structure prior to completing most of the excavation for the bridge.” These “localized excavations allowed for the north and south ends of the bridge to be built, and the [center] pier was installed by drilling caissons.”

Because of this grade separation construction, passengers who frequent Milliken GO can “access the east and west platforms from Steeles Avenue,” increasing safety for these passengers “by separating a high-traffic roadway and a busy rail line.”

Because of this grade separation, a second track and new east platform can be added.

Aside from the grade separation, Steeles Avenue has widened to six lanes, including bicycle lanes “that provide a safe way for more bicyclists to access the station and connect with local transit options, such as the TTC.”
