NEW YORK CITY - The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has announced its Nevins St Station upgrades will be funded by the fourth transit improvement bonus under Zoning for Accessibility.

The project at Nevins St station includes an accessible transfer between the express and local lines at the station, according to the MTA. The funding comes from a private developer through Zoning for Accessibility (ZFA). This allows developers to “improve access to public transit . . . in exchange for an increase in their building’s density.” ZFA was established to create incentives for these private developers to design buildings to incorporate transit accessibility projects or to build these improvements at stations in exchange for a zoning bonus.

Along with an accessible transfer between express and local lines at the station, crews will replace tactile edges and rubbing boards along the station’s platform edges and replace all four of the mezzanine-to-platform stairs with ADA-compliant stairways. Developer of 95 Rockwell PI will finance and construct these improvements.

“Through Zoning for Accessibility, we’re delivering real benefits for riders without using public dollars,” said MTA Construction & Development President Jamie Torres Springer. “Thanks to Charney’s partnership, more Brooklyn riders will have an accessible transfer point and a smoother, safer trip.”

“All transit riders who move through Nevins Street will benefit from an enhanced and accessible transfer platform especially parents and caregivers with children in strollers, visitors with luggage, New Yorkers with disabilities, and so many others,” said MTA Chief Accessibility Officer Quemuel Arroyo. “Thanks to Zoning for Accessibility these improvements will be made at no cost to the MTA nor taxpayers, and will make the process of completely upgrading the station in the future better, faster, and cheaper.”

“This is a great public private partnership and are proud to be a part of modernizing and improving the Nevins Street station in Fort Greene,” said Charney Companies Head of Development Rosie Tilley. “As a company, we like to be civic partners, and our financing of this project frees up Transit Authority capital for other priorities.”
