The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced on April 17 that crews have completed renovation work at the Grand St BD subway station in Chinatown under New York City Transit’s Re-NEW-vation campaign, which entailed rebuilding station components during a 55-hour window.

Crews rebuilt stairwells’ walls and staircases, repainted the ceilings over platforms and tracks, cleaned, replaced and upgraded lighting, refinished benches and power-washed all areas of the station, a release said.

With the announcement of 13 planned station renovations in March, NYC Transit will be on track to complete 34 stations by the end of June, putting it on track to meet its goal of 50 renovated stations by the end of 2023.

Stations are selected for renovation work based on planned weekend outages to minimize impact to commuters, and following initial deep cleanings and repairs, MTA says routine and specialized cleaning will maintain the renovations.

MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber and New York City Transit President Rich Davey visited the Grand St station on April 16 to discuss the progress crew members have made to rebuild and replace station components.

“It is great to see the energy and spirit of teamwork that our crews bring to this work,” Lieber said. “These Re-NEW-vation projects are taking advantage of short periods of downtime to knock out a huge range of construction and repair work that adds up to a major station upgrade.”
