VTA board awards $16 million construction contract for Capitol Expressway Transit

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority's (VTA) Board of Directors awarded the Granite Rock Company, doing-business-as Pavex Construction Division, a $16.8 million construction contract award for the continued improvements planned along Capitol Expressway and future VTA rapid transit and light
rail corridor.
The Capitol Expressway Transit Improvement Project will ultimately transform Capitol Expressway into a multi-modal boulevard offering bus rapid transit, light-rail and safe pathways with connections to the regional transit system.
“I am pleased to see the momentum continue on the long awaited improvements in East San Jose,” said Santa Clara County Supervisor Dave Cortese. “The Eastridge Transit Center transformation will support VTA’s future bus rapid transit system and eventually light rail, two transit options that will be crucial in battling ever-increasing gas prices and increased roadway congestion.”
Construction is anticipated to be completed by March 2015.
The Capitol Expressway Transit Improvement Project’s final phase plans to extend light rail from the existing Alum Rock Light Rail Station to the Eastridge Transit Center. Light rail will operate primarily in the center of Capitol Expressway with elevated track structures crossing Capitol Avenue, Story Road and Tully Road. The Eastridge extension will include three stations: Story Road, Ocala Avenue and Eastridge. The total cost estimate of extending light rail from the Alum Rock Transit Center to Eastridge Transit Center is approximately $310 million and is pending the availability of future funding.
