CTA train derailment
A CTA Green Line train derailed in Chicago on June 6, injuring seven.

It does not happen often, but when it does it can be quite frightening. Anyone would be scared if the elevated train they were riding slipped off the tracks.

CTA service on the Green Line in Chicago was interrupted for hours on June 6 when a Green Line train partially derailed. A photo taken by the Chicago Tribune showed the right side of the lead train car off the tracks. CTA is investigating the cause of the accident, but said derailments happen, but are rare. There were derailments in 2008 and 2009 on the Green Line.

Seven people were hurt and were taken down on a ladder to receive treatment, but Chicago Fire Department Deputy Chief John Giordano said the train was stable and at no time was it in danger of leaving the tracks. A total of 30 people were on the train.

According to CTA Chief Transit Officer Donald Bonds, officials do not know how fast the train was traveling when the accident happened. Some maintenance work was being executed near the derailment, but it is not clear if it played a role.

Bonds said video systems on the train would help determine a cause.
