WMATA Reopens Farragut North K Street Entrance After Escalator Replacements

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After expedited work, Metro crews replaced three escalators at Farragut North K Street entrance as part of a larger, ongoing replacement project.
Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) announced the Farragut North K Street entrance has reopened with new escalators. This comes two weeks ahead of schedule, according to the transit agency. After Metro closed the entrance, crews were able to access the station using two L Street entrances, and now the K Street entrance has three new escalators and a repaired support beam.
KONE, Metro’s contractor, has so far replaced 78 of 139 escalators “as part of an ongoing replacement project through 2027, helping to ensure our infrastructure remains in a state of good repair.” The average age of the escalators is 9.4 years old, as opposed to 27 years old back in 2011. The replacement also reduces failure rates by almost 30% systemwide.
This year, Metro says Addison Road, Benning Road, Deanwood, Dupont Circle, Fort Totten, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Rosslyn, Vienna, L’Enfant Plaza, Franconia-Springfield, Pentagon, Medical Center, Crystal City, and Twinbrook stations will receive escalator replacements.
