City of Phoenix seeks virtual public input on light-rail project

The Capitol-I-10 West expansion will be a 10-mile route and should be complete by 2030.

The meeting might be virtual, but light-rail growth in the city of Phoenix is very real. Online public meetings began on May 27 and will run for about a month so officials can get public input on a new line called the Capitol-I-10 West expansion.

The 10-mile route will connect downtown Phoenix to a park-and-ride at 79^th Avenue off of I-10. A Phase 1 route would run along Washington Street from downtown Phoenix west to the state Capitol, and it is expected to be complete in 2024. The Phase 2 portion will run from 19^th Avenue and Van Buren Street along I-17, connect with I-10 and end at 79^th Avenue. Phase 2 should be finished by 2030.

The project is part of the city’s Transportation 2050 plan, which consists of bus, light rail and street improvements. The federal government should pay for a portion of the project, but officials are not sure exactly how much. The city also will use funds generated by a sales tax approved by voters in 2015.
