Citing family reasons, Maryland Transportation Secretary Pete Rahn has resigned. Known by some as a controversial figure, Rahn, under Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, pushed for the state’s light-rail Purple Line. George Slater will take over for Rahn in January. Slater has been in charge of Maryland’s State Highway Administration.

Rahn was Maryland’s transportation head since 2015, and this past July Hogan appointed him to the Metro board. Rahn led Hogan’s charge for a Purple Line serving the Washington suburbs, and in turn killed a Red Line project for Baltimore. The Purple Line has been marred with construction issues. The Howard Street Tunnel project, which will expand the tunnel and raise bridges to handle double-stacked freight cars, just got the official green light because it is now “fully funded.”
