COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) approved safety upgrades at the Columbia Street rail crossing.
The rail crossing is located in Saint Marys, Auglaize County, and will be installed by RJ Corman Railroad Company by October 2, 2025. $183,665 in federal funds will go toward the upgrades.
Additionally, federal funding for safety improvements (rumble strips, illumination, improved signage, etc.) will come from the State Grade Crossing Safety Fund and will not exceed $5,000 per project.
PUCO says it’s responsible for evaluating Ohio’s public grade crossings to determine if installing active warning devices is necessary. Train-motor vehicle crashes at rail crossings in Ohio have decreased as a result, with 77 crashes in 2023.
