Full road and sidewalk closures will accompany Bloor bridge reconstruction

Metrolinx will be closing the road and sidewalks on Bloor Street West in Toronto while crews install bridge girders on the west half of the Bloor bridge. Find out why the work is important – and even learn a thing or two about girders.

Bloor St. West is about to see road and sidewalk closures that will lead to better transit.

The replacement of the Bloor Street West rail bridge between Lansdowne Avenue and Symington Avenue is an important piece to the Davenport Diamond Guideway project. This work is part of new infrastructure Metrolinx is building to support future all-day train service that will allow trains to travel simultaneously in both directions on the Barrie GO line. The reconstruction of this bridge will help bring more frequent and quieter GO train service.  

Bloor Street West, between St. Helens Avenue and Ruttan Street, will be fully closed for four evenings starting Tuesday, March 29 from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. and reopening on Saturday, April 2 at approximately 6:00 a.m.

Metrolinx will be implementing a full closure of Bloor Street West. By closing the entire road and both sidewalks, girders can be installed on the west half of the Bloor bridge. For those unfamiliar with bridge construction, girders are large bridge segments that will support the tracks on top.

Residents and commuters can expect to see machinery in the area including a drill rig, crane, excavators with breaker attachments, loaders, dump trucks, and concrete trucks and pumps.

Here are the details:

• There will be no access for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrian during the closures. Both the roadway and the sidewalks will be closed.
• Through-traffic will not be permitted.
• Detours during the closure include: Lansdowne and Symington avenues going north/south, and across Wallace Avenue going east/west.
• Paid duty officers will be on site for the entire closure.
• Closure and detour signage will be in place.

Prior to the full night closures, alternating lane and sidewalk closures will be in place on March 29 from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Traffic will remain as one lane in each direction, however motorists and cyclists must share the lane.
