The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) will use $8 million in federal funding to replace a timber bridge that was built back in 1917.

The new span will be concrete and will be wide enough for a second set of tracks. SANDAG and the North County Transit District will provide a 42% match of the grant.

SANDAG continues to improve the coastal railroad corridor from San Luis Obispo to San Diego. The track, which is one of the busiest rail routes in the U.S., also goes through Los Angeles. The bridge and double-tracking effort are key components of the corridor upgrade. Construction of the bridge is expected to begin in August 2023.

Almost three-quarters of the 60-mile route in San Diego County has received a second line of tracks.

“The project is expected to maintain safe conditions along the frequently used railway and continue its economic vitality,” SANDAG said in a statement. “This corridor see significant daily train traffic for intercity, freight, and commuter services.”
