WATCH: Amtrak’s Portal North Bridge Update

SECAUCUS, NJ – Amtrak continues with its Portal North Bridge Project that is slated to be completed in late 2027.

Amtrak has announced a key phase 1 project within the Gateway Program that will create a new structure to replace the current Portal Bridge in New Jersey. The current bridge is a “moveable swing-span that creates a major bottleneck along the NEC.” The project seeks to reduce the traffic congestion and increase train speeds. 

Working with NJ Transit, it will continue construction with a projected completion of 25% by the end of the summer. The project is slated to be completed in late 2027. Amtrak has stated that “the project remains on schedule.”

The construction work can be seen by travelers on the NEC. Amtrak says it “will be able to deliver more trains to more people in more places – all in the near future” all by “unlocking new capacity on this critical stretch of the NEC.”
