BALTIMORE - CSX has finished the paving on the Guilford Avenue Bridge as part of the Howard Street Tunnel project.

CSX’s project seeks to expand the 1895 tunnel that runs underneath downtown Baltimore in an effort to increase vertical clearance to allow for double-stack intermodal trains to pass. At the end of September, RT&S reported on the reopening of the tunnel. In that reporting, CSX said it had worked to “’combine modern engineering solutions with strategic planning to overcome logistical challenges,’ [and] crews continued to remove rail, excavate, and lower the track profile. At North Avenue Bridge, Guilford Avenue Bridge, and Harford Road Bridge, crews noted these sections required a different approach because of obstructions located beneath the bridges.”

Now, the paving on the Guilford Avenue Bridge is complete, further demonstrating CSX’s “commitment to operational excellence and community partnership,” says the Class I. CSX Senior Director of Mid-Atlantic Construction Brandon Knapp said, “Raising the bridge allowed us to avoid major disruptions and keep the project on track for the community and our customers.”

Below is a video, courtesy of CSX, that shows the progress made.
