Maintenance Briefs –– MTA and WMATA Scheduled Maintenance

NEW YORK and WASHINGTON, D.C. –– MTA and WMATA announced separate infrastructure maintenance that will include temporary weekend service changes.

MTA –– NEW YORK

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced track replacement work along the 4, 5, and 6 lines that will require a suspension of service south of Grand Central-42 St during the weekends of Aug. 15-18 and Aug. 22-25. The service suspensions will begin Friday at 11:30 p.m. and end 5:00 a.m. Monday. During that time, crews will replace the concrete under switches north of 14 Street, which will renew the infrastructure to keep it in a state of good repair and continue to provide reliable service for 1.1 million daily riders. 

This work is part of the MTA’s commitment to maintaining a state of good repair and is pivotal to ensuring the structural stability and functionality of the subway system. Replacing the concrete also protects the system from leaks and corrosion, prolonging the overall longevity of the subway infrastructure.  

During these closures, trains will not run between Grand Central-42 St and Crown Hts-Utica Av or New Lots Av. 4 trains will run local between Woodlawn and Grand Central-42 St. 5 trains will not run between E. 180 St and Bowling Green.  trains will run only north of E 180 St to and from Eastchester-Dyre Av.  trains will not run between Grand Central-42 St and Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall.  6 trains will run local between Pelham Bay Park and Grand Central-42 St.

WMATA –– WASHINGTON, D.C.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority announced that this weekend, Aug. 9-10, and next weekend, Aug. 16-17, the summer construction zone on the Green Line will extend to Anacostia with Congress Heights, Southern Av., Naylor Road, Suitland, and Branch Av. stations closed.

Free local and express shuttle buses replace trains between Anacostia and Branch Av. Express shuttles will stop at Anacostia, Southern Av., and Branch Av. A local shuttle will stop at Anacostia and each closed station.

Crews will install cabling for improved communications and train control system upgrades. In addition, crews will be renewing rails, replacing rail ties, and grout pads for smoother rides. Lighting upgrades include replacing platform edge lights that alert customers of approaching trains and improved lighting in stations for better visibility.

A reminder: Construction on the Green Line continues through Aug. 31, with Branch Av., Suitland, and Naylor Road closed for construction. For more information visit wmata.com/majorconstruction.
